CSI hypertrichosis episode

While reading the story of Julia Pastrana, I was reminded of an old episode of "CSI" (the original Vegas one) that featured a pair of siblings who both suffered from hypertrichosis. The brother's case was less severe; he simply looked very Italian or Armenian because he had extra hair on his arms and face where men are expected to be hairy. The sister, however, was covered head to toe, including all over her face, just like Julia. She was kept hidden from the rest of the world, partially because her brother didn't want her being exposed and treated badly and partly because she didn't want to be seen herself. Her whole life, she was kept in a secret room in her house, and after their parents were gone, the brother stayed there and took care of her. The brother ended up being murdered by a friend or family member of his girlfriend because they didn't want the relationship to result in children that had the same condition. The sister wasn't discovered until the CSI team was at the house looking over the crime scene and found the hidden room. I thought it was really sad that this young lady had been isolated her entire life because of her condition. I couldn't help but think that there are probably real people in this world that have physical deformities that are kept hidden away from the world and are never able to experience a fulfilling life. While Julia Pastrana's case was that of an extreme exploitation and this CSI character's was a case of extreme secrecy, I hope that there are some people who have found an even middle ground. In conclusion, I ask this question: who had it better? Julia, who was exposed to the world but treated like a monster, or the CSI girl, who was hidden from everyone in an effort to protect her but was never able to really live her life?

  1. Sarah,

I had not heard of this episode of CSI so thank you for sharing. I think the question you pose at the end of your post in which you compare the experiences of Julia versus the CSI character is an intriguing one.
