Throughout history, African females have been seen as the lowest member of society.  This fact was no different for Sarah Bartmaan during the early 1800's.  There are a number of very important elements of Sarah Bartmaan's life that can be seen as factors to how we view African females to modern day.  For example, putting Sarah on display, naked, and chained up allowed European citizens to view her as an over sexualized object.  Furthermore, her buttocks were a common item of discussion which is no coincidence to the fact that African females are still stereotyped as having a very large behind.  This evidence of this can be seen in hip hop videos and the media.  What is also important to mention is that Sarah, the deviant, was able to be a "deviant" because the European women, who were proper and clothed, were the "normal" citizens of the time.  I also think that it is very significant that Africans were seen as freaky enough to be in freak shows.  This is significant because is shows the progress we have made as humans.
